We start from the railway station at Chappel (where there is also a railway museum and the possibility of steam train rides, see website).Soon we cross beneath the magnificent viaduct which carries the single-track railway line from Marks Tey to Sudbury.
After this we follow a section of the Essex Way, with excellent views over the valley, then pass through a fruit farm to reach Chalkney Wood and take a superb track through it.
On the return leg we pass a large fishing lake, then walk parallel to the River Colne to arrive back where we started. An excellent walk with something for all the family. All paths were clear and the country lanes were nice and quiet.

Hi Pauline. Thank-you for the nice comments. OS maps measured as 5.9 miles. I've changed it to your recorded mileage of 6.5 miles

Thank you for this wonderfully-varied walk. We started at Chalkney Woods car park (not signed off road but drove down footpath and found it) so that lovely Station Cafe at Railway Museum, where we stopped for lunch, was halfway round. Beautiful fishing lake on route (watch out for jumping fish). A bit further than published: about 6.5miles - but worth it!
