The Yorkshire Dales is for me, one of the loveliest areas of Britain. The high limestone landscape is cleaved by glacial valleys, in which pastures can be seen divided by dry-stone walls. The hundreds of small woodlands are complemented by fast-flowing streams in the area.

This walk takes you from the delightful village of Clapham into the Dales countryside using green lanes. There are 2 long tunnels to go through before climbing to get your first proper views of the hills. A long stretch over good terrain takes you up Crummock dale, crossing several ancient packhorse bridges over babbling peaty streams, and coming out on top of Moughton Scar. This is a vast limestone pavement which is covered with deep fissures. Be careful along this stretch. The views are fantastic along here, so make the most of them. The footpath then drops back down Crummock Dale, and the route returns back over the packhorse bridges through the lovely hamlet of Wharfe, into Austwick, again using green lanes. The return to Clapham uses a track which has been used for hundreds of years as the quick link between these two villages.

An excellent walk - easy to follow through lovely scenery, some high and bleak, but mostly low and verdant, on generally good terrain. One of the best.
