Cononley - Ickornshaw - Pennine Way - Lothersdale - Cononley

Starting at the handsome Pennine village of Cononley, with its excellent and regular rail links, this walk lulls us into a false sense of security with a gentle couple of kilometres contouring around to skirt Glusburn Village.

Then, if anything, the going gets easier with four or five kilometres of gentle walking along a series of pretty becks to Ickornshaw. At Ickornshaw however, we join the Pennine Way, which is far less kind to us, with a 100m+ climb and a 50m+ climb in quick succession. But as we drop down to the village of Lothersdale, the welcoming sight of the Hare and Hounds greets us, where a relaxing drink and meal can be had. Enjoy it while you can, because in Lothersdale we leave the Pennine Way as it climbs steadily up to Pinhaw Beacon, while we choose the bridle-path up to Tow Top, over one hundred metres of steep ascent that will really get your heart pumping.

Once at the top, catch your breath. You'll need it for the breathtaking views as you descend gently back to Cononley.

Very enjoyable walk but definitely need your gaiters very muddy and boggy in lots of areas. Stunning views. Both the pubs in Cononley are friendly and do home cooked foods, both are highly recommended.

I did this walk yesterday on 23 January, as a prelude to taking a group of ramblers on 13 February. It all worked well, but I discovered that the footbridge at point 21 was completely missing. There was a message to say they hoped to replace it early 2011 but.... However, by continuing further along the same side of the brook, you reach another bridge, and after crossing that and climbing up the bank, and across a field (all on RoW paths) you reach point 23 and can proceed with the walk. And yes - lots of challenging stiles, even for me. My dog was fine on most of them but struggled with the squeeze stiles. Well he has put on a bit of weight but any dog much wider than a whippet would have a job to get through them!

An excellent walk.

A Cononley resident has recommended the New Inn to me - particularly for its excellent food.
