The walk is located in Tockwith, in the Vale of York between York and Wetherby in an area of undulating countryside. Although the area is relatively flat, it allows for good views. This is an easy and pleasant walk on flat ground with good terrain, good open countryside views, plenty of birdwatching opportunities and a walk alongside the River Nidd.

The public bridleways in the area appear to be popular with local dog-walkers (dogs are requested to stay on leads) and there are a number of different routes walkers could take depending on the length of walk they wish to do. These are either on tarmacked roads or gravel tracks. It is situated predominantly in farmland, with tracks or roads intersecting fields and hedgerows attracting a variety of wildlife.

Set within the arable landscape of Tockwith Ness, a footpath provides a link between Ness Lane and the River Nidd, where existing rights of way extend along the riverbank. Conservation measures are being employed to create and enhance wildlife habitats and improve the landscape. Grass margins have been created around arable land and new woodland planted. In addition, an artificial otter holt has been built to encourage breeding otters to return to the Nidd catchment.
