The walk starts in Miterdale (pronounced 'Mighterdale'), the least-known and quietest valley in the Lakes (an alternative start is mentioned, from Wasdale). Walk up the valley, which is green and lush to begin with but soon leads up to bleak moorland, from where there are fine views of the surrounding mountains. Walk along the 'wrong' side of Wasdale Screes, past the atmospheric Burnmoor Tarn and then trail up to the top of Illgill Head. From here enjoy the unique and glorious views of Wastwater from above the screes as you walk along the top as far as Whinn Rigg. Descend back to Miterdale via the pleasing path through Miterdale Forest.
