This walk is in an area of the Lake District that is much visited but not, perhaps, by walkers, for whom there are higher and more challenging prospects further north.

The village itself is charming and an excellent base for this walk or for a stay, while the countryside is as attractive as you will find. The walk itself has a start which is over undulating ground through woods and pastures, before a climb of 200m to the limestone ridge of Hampsfell with its 360-degree panorama, flowers and butterflies, followed by a steep descent to Cartmel.

You won't regret coming here for a change and if the weather is poor on the fells you will have a good chance of staying dry here.

16/9/19 Great walk but at point 17 the area beyond the gate is a quagmire of deep (12 to 18 inches) mud and cow manure for about 50 yards or so with no way to avoid it.I would strongly suggest walking a few yards further up the lane to another footpath sign post leading to Longlands, the path then joins up with the original route.

Lovely walk through peaceful forests , short road trek then onto open fields again, the climb up to Hampsfell Hospice was a slog but the views here were incredible, Morecambe Bay on left and entire Lake District mountain ranges to the right. Fully recommend.

Hi, this walk was very nice until we got to waymark 17, after passing through the first gate into the farmyard, the second gate had a herd of not so friendly bulls behind it...so our route was blocked, we called at the farmhouse, but it is unoccupied, we got back on to the road and went up the bridle path into longlands house we where able to reach the Hospice on this route. So be warned, beware of the bulls !!!!
