St Birinus Part 3: South Moreton – Mackney – North Moreton

The walk starts with a loop to the south and west of South Moreton, in order to meet Part 2 of the St Birinus series, visiting the church where pilgrim passports are stamped. It then passes through the village again before crossing low-lying farmland where fields are as likely to be separated by drainage ditches as by hedges. The views are of Wittenham Clumps and the Sinodun Hills, which will be tackled in Part 4 of the series. At the right season, birds and butterflies can be seen en route.

Briefly touching the hamlet of Mackney, the walk turns west to head for North Moreton. It meanders through this delightful village with old houses to admire, a church to visit and the opportunity to take a break in a pub which boasts a CAMRA award, returning over more low-lying fields to South Moreton.
