Hayfield - Snake Path - Kinder Reservoir - Hill Houses - Hayfield

This walk starts from the car park at Bowden Bridge in Hayfield, where you will see a plaque commemorating the mass trespass of 1932 which started from this spot. Walking back towards Hayfield Village the route then takes the popular Snake Path leading towards Kinder Scout. At the north head of the reservoir it follows a quiet path, not on the map, leading to a wooden footbridge over the Kinder River just before it enters the reservoir. The bridge was erected as a memorial to Joanna Helen Jennings, who died in 2001 at the age of 22. There is a brass plaque on the reservoir side of the bridge.

If time permits it is worth exploring upstream towards Peter Nook Wood where there are some fine spots for a picnic by the river. This is a lovely, quiet area well away from the crowds that climb Kinder Scout. After crossing the bridge a track climbs upwards towards Upper House, picking up a National Trust footpath leading alongside the woods south of the reservoir. From here it joins a narrow tarmac road, then takes a well-defined track through Farlands Booth and Hill Houses back to the starting point. This last section has some fine views of the twin peaks of South Head and Mount Famine.

2/1/2021 - Simon Worrall

Walked January 2021 - very pleasant walk along well trodden and signed footpaths so easy to navigate the whole route. NOTE - the stream at WP11 was in full spate after heavy rain and the stepping stones were submerged - got across albeit with damp boots afterwards! CAR PARKING - The pay and display car park at Bowden Bridge is popular at weekends and parking is discouraged on the narrow roads around it. We parked for free in the centre of Hayfield and walked up from the Pack Horse pub to WP2 and on the way back into Hayfield along the Pennine Way footpath (just before Bowden Bridge between the camp site and River Sett) leading to Valley Road and down to Market St.
