Wrabness - Little Oakley - Hamford Water - Essex Way - Ramsey - River Stour - Wrabness

The best way to get to the start of this walk is to use the picturesque branch railway line which runs from Manningtree to Harwich. From the station you soon enter Stour Wood, a beautiful area of chestnut woodland. Having crossed an area of farmland, you arrive beside Hamford Water, a delightful tidal backwater with glorious views and a wide variety of birdlife. Following its edge you next arrive at a very secluded beach (Irlam's Beach) on the edge of the expanse of the North Sea known as Pennyhole Bay. Picking up the Essex Way here, you begin crossing farmland again and pass through Little Oakley to reach the picturesque little village of Ramsey with its windmill. Continuing north, still on the Essex Way, you reach Stour Woods again and carry on to the bank of the River Stour, from which you have incredible views across to Suffolk on its north bank and the Royal Hospital School at Holbrook. After an all too short stroll along the river you then head briefly away from it to arrive back at the tiny station of Wrabness.

A very enjoyable walk that we have done a number of times. Please note however, that the instruction no. 20 needs to be updated. After passing Stradlands the path has been diverted and no longer goes diagonally across the field. The correct way is now to turn left after passing Stradlands and walk around the perimeter of the field.

I did this walk on 5/4/09 and it is very enjoyable. The long stretch along the sea wall adjacent to the mud flats and marshes is great for birds and assorted wildlife and although fairly long it's a gentle walk because it's so flat. An enjoyable Sunday ramble.

Another super walk but the parking at Wrabness station is very limited. Another option if travelling by car is to park in the car park for the RSPB reserve, Stour Wood, on the B1352 just past waymark 4, (GR 189 309). If starting at the car park, turn right onto the road and walk for approx 100 yards when the footpath at waymark 4 is on your left. Another option is in section 6. It is easily possible to turn left at Southouse Farm onto a footpath which crosses two fields and finishes on the road at the junction where you turn right going downhill (waymark 8 GR 204 291) Surprisingly, this is one of the few paths which has been cut out and so easily followed through the cereal.
