The Sahara-like conditions present in this area 250 million years ago have left sand and salt in abundance. The sandy heathland has characteristic plants and animals as well as the remains of sand quarries. An old railway and the River Weaver Navigation form part of the route. Each owes its existence to the salt trade.

The walk passes areas well-known for dragonflies. Slightly larger and even more spectacular are the kingfishers that can sometimes be seen by the River Weaver. Many other birds and mammals live along the route of the walk. On warm, sunny days you might be lucky enough to see a grass snake basking.

On the warm, sunny afternoon of 9th July 2014, the barley field between WP08 and WP09 was an iridescent blue ribbon of damsel flies with occasional red dragon flies. Well worth the effort just to see the insects. Mind you, it is a good idea to have insect repellent on at the moment as the mosquitos etc are also busy!

The winter storms have brought down a fair number of trees across the paths, especially between waypoints 12 and 17. A degree of agility is needed to negotiate some of them.
