This is a delightful and very popular circular walk along the bank of the river Dee from Handbridge in Chester, then along through the Duke of Westminster's woods, down his drive - now a bridle path - back to Handbridge. The river is probably the most interesting feature of the walk, with large passenger boats, (photo on the right), cabin cruisers, rowing eights and canoes to watch sail by. In summer the river is so full of boats that even the police have a launch. Do not attempt this walk after severe storms in Wales or long periods of very heavy rain as the Dee may be in flood, and as the meadows are a flood plain, they may become submerged. This walk is an alternative route to three others in this locality, the shorter 7839 walk, the longer 2290 walk, or the even longer 7833 walk, and includes instructions for walkers from moored river boats.

The walk is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. It is excellent for dogs as there are no stiles, good for buggies - although they will need carrying in a few places, but hopeless for wheelchairs. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best after wet weather as the ground may be quite soft. There should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. There are refreshments and toilets in pubs and cafes near the end of this walk, but no picnic tables. There are several bench seats along the path by the river and at other odd places on the route. If you wish to use the Grosvenor Arms car park you will need to book a meal with your drink at the end of your walk and obtain their permission to park for your walk. Tel. 01244 680221.
