This is a linear walk that involves parking at the Howlands Park and Ride car park and catching the P&R bus into Durham City to start the walk. The route initially crosses the neck of the historic peninsula and then passes along the lanes, woods and nature reserves to the south of the city before returning to the car park at Howlands.

From the bus stop in Milburngate the route enters the historic peninsula, passing through the Market Place, the vibrant heart of the city. The walk leaves the peninsula and continues past the old prison, then keeping company with the River Wear the route intersects the University playing-fields at Maiden Castle before arriving at the charming village of Shincliffe. Superb lane- and woods-walking delivers you to the most southerly part of the walk at Croxdale Bridge. After a little pavement-walking the route then passes through a delightful new Woodland Trust property then a pleasant wood to end back at the P&R car park at Howlands.
