The walk starts and ends by the Rochdale Canal in Slattocks, which lies between Middleton and Castleton. It follows the canal downstream to reach a railway bridge. It leaves the canal to follow a lane and a college access road and reach the first woodland. After a circular route through the woodland there is a short section along footpaths and a lane to reach a short section above a brook and through trees, before reaching the second woodland which is split into two parts by a lane. A path is followed through this woodland before entering the third woodland. After a circuit of this woodland you pass through the second woodland again to reach a lane. Follow the lane and a footpath to reach the fourth and last woodland. Following a circuit of this woodland, the return to the start point is along a footpath and then a road. There is a slight up and down diversion in the middle of the fourth woodland for a 360-degree viewpoint. There are a number of ponds along this route including a larger one in the fourth woodland. There are a number of streams as well. Fences play a big part in this walk as several of the paths run roughly parallel with them in the second and third woodlands. There are a number of short sections of the Rochdale Way along this walk.
