We begin our hike in the lovely old town of Alaró which nestles below the imposing Serra de Tramuntana. After exploring the town with its Saturday market, we set out from the main square to follow the little tarmac lane that leads us up towards the Castell d'Alaró. This takes us through timeless Mallorcan countryside full of flowers and almond, carob and olive trees and we have the occasional stretch of track to keep us off the little lane. Eventually we climb to reach the famous and picturesque Es Verger Restaurant. You can pop in to make a reservation for later if you wish. There is a wide menu but their lamb is renowned. Tell them you will be back in a couple of hours.

Now we continue up a clear track and later steps to bring us to the ancient Arab fortress, now sadly mostly ruined. Further up lies the refuge, which has a small bar and a lovely little chapel. After enjoying the magnificent views right over to Palma, we begin down the same way we came up before forking off to take a shorter and different route down. We finish up below the restaurant and have to re-climb a little before enjoying our well-deserved reward. Afterwards the lovely descent is just what is needed after lunch and we are soon back in Alaró, where even more refreshment is available!
