Save Our Footpaths - get off the beaten track, this circular walk starts and finishes along footpaths which are not often used, but most of the other paths are used frequently. At the start of the walk are meadows, so in summer take a walking stick to fend off any possible cows you may meet. There are the usual variety of stiles and gates; most of them are in fair order, but the second is broken and very wobbly. At the start of the canal section, you will pass the old Iron Lock; now an ancient monument, and you may be lucky and see a boat using it (photo on the right). Most of the route is quite flat, but at the end of the canal section there is a short but steep hill climb, which includes steps. There are a few diversions from the route shown on the map; and marker arrows are missing in two localities. Nothing spectacular on this walk but the countryside is pleasant, and the canal is the main feature. The walk includes instructions for moored canal boat users.

The walk is probably most suitable for children, senior citizens, and anyone in-between, good for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled, but boots will be best and essential in winter or after heavy rain. There should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are refreshments at the start and finish but no food. You'll find bench seats scattered along the canal towpath but no other facilities. If you phone in advance you should be able to book a parking slot, and perhaps a table to enjoy a packed lunch with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
