From the Lay by on the A6 the route follows the Cromford Canal towards Ambergate. Eventually it turns uphill to pass through a lovely wooded area. Then a ridge walk with great views takes the walker to Crich village centre. We then continue up to the Tram Museum (worth a visit) and the Cromford Stand War memorial. This is the halfway point. From here we are going downhill through old quarries enhanced by the passage of time to produce a dramatic, and scenic backcloth to the path. Then we reach the Cromford Canal to turn left, and make our way back to the walk stating point.

The excellent cafe at the half way point is only open Saturdays and Sundays at the moment but there is some hope that this will be extended in the future.

Completed this walk 15/09/2012. Agree with Paul, parking in the station car park is better, £2 all day ticket. Waymark 11. Recommend the pub Black Swan just up the road from telephone kiosk for excellent bacon sandwiches! Waymark 15 the Tea rooms are still open. Waymark 23 the awkward stile has been replaced by a wooden gate.

The Staton Car Park at Whatstandwell may be a better car park option than the lay-by.

7/2/2006 - Anthony Lowe

At Waymark 23 the Red Telephone Kiosk has now been removed, but the five barred gate is still there. You will know you are at the correct place as the track is opposite a house and it has a public footpath.

If you do not want to go through the village of Crich and pass the Tea Rooms (which are currently open July 06) then you can go from Waymark 13 to 18 as you come back to this point after going past the Tea Rooms.
