This is a wonderfully atmospheric walk that treads in the footsteps of our ancient forefathers. From Amesbury it visits the mysterious Old and New King Barrows and the largest prehistoric monument in the area, The Cursus. There are excellent views of Stonehenge along the route. The beautiful downland area is owned and protected by the National Trust, although Stonehenge itself is managed by English Heritage.

The last part of the walk back to Amesbury uses one of a number of permitted paths in the area to avoid the section along the busy A303 mentioned in the comments. A return on public bridleways and footpaths through a downland nature reserve and alongside the River Avon completes a very enjoyable experience.

Took Moira's advice and crossed over the A303 and took the permissive path. How dangerous is this road? Had to wait for 5 mins for a gap in the traffic to cross. With all the work going on, they should put a crossing or bridge there. After a lengthy bit of road walking, this settled into a very nice walk. The goal, of course, was stonehenge. And if you use the permissive path, you can save the entry fee and get just as good a view. Thanks for the walk. Photos at http://mappiman.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/160314-saving-2980.html

Great walk. We stopped off for food at Stonehenge. My dog loved it. Be careful crossing the road at Stonehenge, it's very busy!

A lovely walk with great views of Stonehenge, buy may we suggest a change at point 7 as you can avoid the short walk alongside the very busy A303. At point 7 cross the road and take the track directly in front of you, walk along it for a short way and you will see a signpost marked "Amesbury" clearly directing you left, across the field. (at this point you are walking parallel with the 303). Cross this field to the next boundry and return to the instructions. Our dog was much happier with this arrangement!
