From the small car park the route first follows one of General Wade's military roads; later it undulates across fluvio-glacial deposits, clay with boulders deposited by the retreating ice and later re-sorted by water from the melting ice-front. It's interesting to see how the flora changes with local differences in glacial deposits. Notice the filled-in remnants of glacial lakes, particularly after Waymark 14, where they occur on both sides of the path, recognizable by the long grass growing in them; they attract the roe deer living in the wood. The notice-board at the car park gives information about the animals, birds and plants of the wood.
