Get hooked on Galloway with these easy walks from the bustling, friendly little Wigtownshire town of Newton Stewart with its many amenities.

The full circuit, of over seven miles, much of it within the delightful sight and sound of tumbling water, offers a taste of Galloway in microcosm – hills, moorland, woods, water, ancient monuments, beautiful dry-stone walls, wide views: start at either Waymark 1 or 4.

The middle-distance walk of above five miles omits the loop through Knockman Wood to a Neolithic chambered cairn and a lochan: start at Waymark 1 or 4 and omit Waymarks 11 to 17 inclusive.

The short option is little more than a stroll along the riverbanks and around the town: start at Waymark 4 and omit Waymarks 8 to 20 inclusive.

To dispense with the town element, start the walk from the former Indoor Bowling Centre near Waymark 7, or street-park nearby on Cumloden Road: walk length four-and-a-half miles.

Walk 7319, 'Around Newton Stewart 2', describes a shorter walk in the vicinity; Walk 7591, 'Around Newton Stewart 3' is the latest route around the town.
