Starting from the B4560, there is some loss of height initially, down to the stream. From here it is a sometimes difficult, but steady climb to the head of the stream. The only real climb is up to the Chartist Cave. The return route is fairly straightforward. There are wide views from all across the ridge.

31/08/2014. We did this walk on fairly warm August day and would echo the sentiments of Gary. Just navigating around the filter house itself was difficult and dangerous in places with no discernable path to follow, and to make matters worse there were 2 streams - not one! We chose the 2nd just because it looked the easier option but it was very difficult and at times almost impassable although it did turn out to be right choice but very confusing. Not sure how this could be classified as a public footpath at all. 2hours 38mins ended up as 4 hours and not a good walking experience. Barry Hood

OK did this walk on the bank holiday Monday in August. Once you reach the filter house the path is not at all clear. The natural assumption is that you cross the stream at the bridge but the map clearly shows the footpath this side of the stream and this side of the filter house as you approach (see waypoint 4). There is indeed a marker post about 12 inches high and covered with overgrown foliage. Indeed the path from this point to waypoint 5 is really overgrown, uneven and you find yourself crossing the stream a couple of times to find the best path. Once the views open out again the route is easy but my group gave me some funny looks and this is certainly not a walk for anyone wearing shorts.
