A truly lovely walk in wonderful countryside from the charming little setting of Barton, visiting the beautiful village of Welford-on-Avon and the smaller, pretty village of Dorsington. Walking on sections of two long-distance paths, The Avon Valley Footpath and the Heart of England Way, part of the route follows the River Avon as it meanders through lush meadows. One could quite easily believe that one had stepped back into old England upon entering Welford-on-Avon with its breathtaking half-timbered dwellings and the stunning spectacle of the 65ft high maypole, one of the tallest in the country.

From Barton to Welford, think 6ft nettles cover footpath.

5/7/2021. Walking the long distance path along the river was horrendous.6ft stinging nettles were virtually making path impassable. We got stung all over. We kept going. They cover all paths for a very long distance over the meadows. Great walk after the nettles. Fab little pub called the Bell at welford. Pretty garden. The amazing houses and cottages compensated, but be very warned not a good time to do the walk nettle season.

17/7/20. At 2 there is car park called Forest Barton, which was being upgraded when I looked for the path so continue a few more yards to the track on the left. At the end of the short track was another parking area, turn right to reach the river walk and then left over the footbridge. A footpath should lead to the river when Forest Barton is finished.
