An interesting and varied nine miler that straddles the County Durham and Tyne and Wear border. Half of the walk is through the delightful woods that the area is noted for and a long railway path that reveals great views looking north across the Team Valley links the two wooded halves of the walk. The circular route totally surrounds the popular award-winning Beamish Open Air Museum.

The walk starts from near the entrance to Beamish Museum and passes through a series of individual woods collectively known as Beamish Woods as the route heads along the Team Valley following the Heritage Way route and briefly following the River Team before intersecting the Great North Forest Trail, a former railway track-bed. A long pull up the gently rising track follows before the route heads south through a charming Woodland Trust Nature Reserve and then a delightful wooded lane to pass around Beamish Hall Hotel. The final section of the walk leads you once again into Beamish Woods for a very pleasant ramble back to the car park.

I walked this walk with friends on May 2nd and it really is a fabulous walk as it undulates around the perimeter of Beamish open air museum for just over 9 miles. Woodlands, rivers, good views and railway tracks, this walk has it all. The walk notes say there are no refreshment opportunities after the start but this is not true as a wonderful surprise awaits just off track to the left between waymark 15 and 16 at Barkisland road. As a slight critiscism some of the estimated way mark gaps seem short but hold your nerve and you will find what you are looking for. A good circular route that starts and finishes at an easy to find car park. Gerry Beamond
