This walk starts at the car park at the bottom of Near Black Clough (where the Trans Pennine Trail leaves the old railway line). There is an optional short (but steep) scramble, before climbing gently to the top of Bleaklow. The return uses the Pennine Way towards Crowden, followed by the gentle finish along the Longdendale Trail (dismantled railway).

Thanks Dave. I re-walked this walk in January 2006, and your suggestion certainly is the best route. The walk was all open at the time.

Section 3 : It is possible to sample the delights of Birchen Bank Wood without the steep scramble. When you get to the small glade, turm sharp right and take a broad path which climbs steadily out of the wood. At the top, turn sharp left onto the Clough edge path.
