The first part of the walk climbs gently up to Bal Bach. The ridge between the Grwyne Fawr Valley and the Llanthony Valley goes over Bal Mawr and the highest point in Gwent, before descending to the Blacksmith's Anvil and then the Grwyne Valley. There are lovely views up the Grwyne Valley to the reservoir and beyond.
