From the car park there is a delightful walk through the hilly Bramcote Woods. Nearby is the attractive walled garden, worthy of a visit at the beginning or end of the walk. Then the route climbs the hill, with the the mysterious bulk of Hemlock Stone situated at its base. Views abound from the hilltop before we go down the other side to the Nottingham Canal for an interesting walk to Ilkeston. On the way refreshments can be purchased at the garden centre that straddles the old canal. At Ilkeston we change over to the 'still in use' Ererwash Canal for another interesting walk back to Trowel, where we rejoin the first canal near the garden centre (refreshments) to return to the car park. Wildlife on the canals is abundant.

Walked 30Aug2013 in sunny warm conditions. Pleasant but much the same type of scenery on several miles of canal towpath. Bramcote Hills offered more interest. Route guide needs update: many stiles now kissing gates, some man made features, eg tree trunks, used as position locators no longer present, some more guidance required if walker starts from Ilkeston as 'retrace you're steps' is of little help to them.

A lovely walk on a frosty morning.

Walked 4/6/08 - lovely walk. Felt more like 8 rather than 6 miles. Excellent food '2 for 1' at Festival Inn -point 21 about two thirds along the way.
