The Howardian Hills AONB has numerous footpaths, some of which are rarely walked. This route uses a section of the low-lying, 28-mile Foss Walk, which follows the river from York to Easingwold.

The walk starts from Dutch House, an ecological sculpture garden, with excellent café, art shop and studio at Mill Green, near Crayke. The owners are happy to allow walkers to park at the tea room and hope they will support their enterprise by taking refreshments there at the start or end of the walk. We walk north through the village of Brandsby and later pass the site of the former Marton Abbey near Stillington, no longer standing, before visiting the hilltop village of Crayke, high above the Vale of York, where we have views on a clear day down to South Yorkshire.

I did this walk with my partner In January when we were staying at the Durham Ox so we started at point 14. A lovely walk in rolling countryside in an area of Yorkshire which we had not explored before. There were some very muddy sections, to be expected in the middle of winter, but also several sections on well surfaced tracks and quiet lanes so overall the mud wasn't a problem.

An easy walk through well managed estates with some surprisingly expansive views, considering there didn't seem to be any uphill sections at all. I had a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon walking, Thank you.
