From the little isolated village of Brez, our outward journey takes us parallel to the Canal de las Arredondas that was the route used by the miners down to Brez from the mountains. Mining was a huge industry in the Picos in years gone by. A couple of kilometres brings us to the Prao La Mayor (1000m) very close to the mountains and with the most splendid panoramas. The way back down is an equal delight with beech woods and great views down over Brez from Castro de las Cerras, from where we descend quite steeply back to Brez.

We undertook this walk a couple of weeks ago. As suggested we parked on the outskirts of Brez and started off. Navigation is straight forward and we enjoyed our amble. There was a pleasant contrast between being in the open and having the views (stunning) and then the wooded areas and having some shade. The walk was straight forward though you need to concentrate as you return to Brez and make sure you take the correct lane out and back to the lay by! We didn't, but it only added yards to the walk and enabled us to see more of Brez. On our return to the car the lay by was full, so do be mindful of that when you decide to go.
