Taking the footpath opposite the Spot Garage, which stands on the main road that runs through the middle of the village, the route soon ventures out into meadows and fields, then joins a bridleway from where there are wonderful views of the countryside and the radio receiving tower of Charwelton, standing high on one of the hills in the distance. Outlying farms and barns dot the landscape and the narrow back road leads right along to where pastureland surrounds the radio tower, which is passed by at close range. The mill without sails comes into view on the approach to Hellidon, where there is a vineyard. Part of this pretty village is visited, taking in the delightful little Church of St John the Baptist, before taking to open fields again, to walk close by Charwelton receiving tower, this time on its other side. A gradual climb allows superb views over magnificent countryside, wide and far-reaching, then hedgerows and field edges are followed for most of the way back to Byfield.
