The first and last parts of this walk are probably the most demanding, passing over Carsington Pasture and later crossing the Griffe Grange Valley along which the A5012 road via Gellia passes.
The walk includes a wide range of terrain though mostly field-paths. All stiles were present on last walking, but at some points markers were missing.

The central point of the walk, Winster (a hillside village), parts of which have been used in the Peak Practice TV Drama series, has a couple of pubs. The one this walk takes in is the Miners Standard at the top of the village; they offer a reasonably priced menu, a good range of beers and several bench tables in the beer garden at the back. They also have a camping site to the rear of the pub. At the bottom of the village, accessed by steep narrow streets, there is another pub, the Bowling Green, which has been known to turn walkers away; also toilets and a few shops.
