This walk was originally contributed by Anne and Brian Sandland. Walkingworld is very grateful for Sid Marks taking over this route, January 2021.

The great majority of this walk is on good bridleways, but there is a short section of quiet country lane and you cross a B road twice. We have included detail of the Roman theatre and temple in the write-up for Walk 7005 and the general photo for this walk has its companion here, as one shows the notice-board giving details of the temple and the other shows the theatre.

The Romans had a substantial settlement in the Colchester area for many years, until Boadicea championed the cause of the native Britons and drove them out. Colchester is in fact Britain's oldest recorded town.
