A good route for a short and brisk circular walk in the countryside, starting in the suburbs of Chester. Why not enjoy a bit of exercise before enjoying a nice meal at an old quiet village pub mainly used by locals. The scenery is very pleasant but not spectacular and there are nice views over the Gowy valley. Following a short walk down the lane you join the Longster Trail at the 'Bird in the Hand' inn, (photo on the right), which is popular with hikers. The trail is a broad path which goes all the way to Oxen Bridge but due to secured gates with narrow gaps for walkers it's hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies but good for dogs if they can squeeze under the half-way stiles. The return route is along the narrow 'Tilefields Path' with the first section crossing a cultivated field which may be muddy if the farmer has been working on it. Other paths may be a bit sticky after heavy wain or in winter.

The walk is most suitable for teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between and suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled, but boots may be best in winter. There should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. There are no bench seats or picnic tables on this route except for those outside the pub. Drinks, food and toilets are at the pub, if you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your drink, an excellent finish to a good walk. (See 'Additional info' below). The village church was built in 1815 on the site of a previous church and the interior was restored in 2001. You will find it on the right of Church Street, just past Vicarage Close.
