Stage 1 of the Cleveland Way starts in the small family seaside resort of Filey. You may want to spend a while exploring this interesting little seaside town, before heading to Filey Brigg, a rocky promontory that extends 1600m into the north sea and the official start and end of the Cleveland Way. After having your photo taken by the official marker-stone (which also marks the end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way), we follow the national trail along this lovely stretch of coastline, passing the beautiful Cayton Bay area.

We enter the busy resort of Scarborough along the seafront promenade, passing the Spa complex, before climbing into the town. There's an awful lot to see and do in Scarborough, but when your time's up, the regular bus or train service will whisk you back to the start at Filey.

This was an amazing walk but waymark 8 was very confusing. Instead of going down the steps you cross the road at Cayton Bay and walk up a steep hill in a field. This is signposted and there were cattle in the field. A little later there is a sign to enter woodland but again you ignore this and carry on towards Scarborough. You no longer enter the woodland at all.
