A strenuous climb through forest and alpine pasture to the Col de Vallouise, with the option to continue to the summit of la Condamine. The route climbs from valley level to the col at around 2,600m. The continuation to la Condamine will add a further 300m or so of height gain and another couple of kilometres of distance each way.

The first stretch is on a zigzag path through forest. At around 2,000m you continue above tree level into a wide bowl, where you are likely to see and hear marmots. From here the path cuts up to the col, where there are great views into Italy and across to the peaks of L'Ecrins.

Descent is largely by the same path, with a detour to the Cabane de Chouvet, a nice spot for a final rest before completing the walk.
