Beginning beneath the chapel in the cave at Covadonga where the River Mestes cascades out of the rocks, we begin a stiff ascent. We will steadily climb Monte Auseva through dense forest, eventually emerging on the grassy plain known as the Venda de Orandi. Close by the River Mestes disappears into the mountain to re-emerge below by the chapel. Now we will follow the course of the river on a path that passes through a rocky defile and is tricky in places. Reaching the isolated stone shelters of La Vega we will climb again to reach a path that will lead us to a camino near Las Llaceries. Following this down for about two kilometres, we join the road from Covadonga to the Los Lagos mountain park above. We will follow this road down for another two kilometres, passing a magnificent viewpoint called Canonigos before branching off on a short woodland way back to the start.

Thank goodness we had this walk! We unintentionally visited on the holiday celebrating Holy Mary and Covadonda was heaving! The initial climb took 40 mins and took us up to a beautiful walk where we were alone. Well worth the climb and easy to navigate.
