From the start our way climbs steeply, initially taking us high above the Rio Júcar. Words are hard to find to describe the amazing scenery. Soon we are on more level footing and reach the lovely and tranquil Hermitage of San Julian. Now we have a steep zigzag descent including a steep flight of steps to bring us down to the road. We have to walk along the road footpath a little to reach the quirky El Alfar café cum local products place. You have to go in – it is like a museum! Soon after, we cross the river and begin to head south along the eastern side of the valley. The flora is very different and the way is even more beautiful, if that is possible. Unfortunately there is one more steep climb up steps before we resume on a lovely footpath with stunning views. Before long Cuenca comes into view and we are soon descending past old houses down to the river once more. We have only to cross the bridge to find ourselves back at the start.
