The walk starts with quite a climb, but the views give plenty of chances for stops. There are good examples of boundary stones on the ridge. McNamara was one of the big land-owning squires of the 1800s. He built the Hermitage, in the valley, to house his lady-love and travelled on horseback to see her. The ruined building is in the valley, but this walk takes you part of the way down "McNamara's Road" (see photo on title page).
