The route lies around twelve miles north of York and uses public paths, bridleways, tracks and a few short road sections in the AONB. This is racehorse country and indeed we pass through a notable trainer's establishment; Peter Beaumont trains at Foulrice Rarm near Whenby. Look for a very ancient tree near Stearsby at grid ref SE 614713 and try and estimate its age.

Please note that the footbridge at waymark 17 is reported broken and the path closed (August 2022). You may wish to miss out this section turning right onto the minor road at waymark 14 and rejoining the route via the footpath on your left. If you do go to check its status a report would be much appreciated.

An alternative route is now suggested from WP05 for the few months in late spring/early summer when this section can get rather overgrown. Thank you Christine. Phil (Contributor)

This would be a lovely walk apart from the fact that parts of it are seriously overgrown. We could not enter the wood at WP 05 because of brambles and nettles. At WP 06 we saw the gate from the field but it was inaccessible. We had to make our way through crops to a gate on the lane. The paths are well signposted, but poorly maintained on the whole of the route. On a positive note, we found a lovely seat in front of the church at Whenby and bought eggs at WP19.
