The walk starts at the car park for Derker Metro Station in the town of Oldham. You have a short climb through a housing area before walking up to Oldham Edge. You then walk down towards the area of Royton Moss, where you pass through an industrial area to reach open countryside. On reaching open countryside you follow some marked and unmarked paths up towards another housing area. On this section you cross two streams. You walk alongside and above the second stream. You then continue on a suburban road and beside a reservoir inlet along an access road into more countryside. You then drop down, following part of the Crompton Circuit, to reach the bottom of the valley. The last section follows the Beal Valley Way to an open area, where you would follow unmarked tracks towards the last housing area before returning to the start point.
There are several up and down sections on this walk. It crosses and walks above the River Beal. There are no toilets. The sections from Waymarks 19 to 20 and 34 to 35 follow unmarked paths, so anyone using GPS might find the co-ordinates out of sync. Some of the marked paths appear either not to exist or are overgrown.
Important: there is a planning application in place to create a golf course on the land between Waymarks 17 and 24 and also between 34 and 36. This application has been in place for a number of years (since 1994) and it has been extended to allow completion of the golf course by 13th January 2020. Footpaths should be unaffected and remain in place. The farm shown on maps as Harley Road Farm has been demolished and this would be the site of the clubhouse. No building work has taken place as of August 2018. The only evidence of any changes are the wide tracks, some of which are used in this walk.
