Start from Dorchester (the Roman town of Doracina) with its fine 200ft-long late-Norman abbey; walk a beautiful stretch of the Thames Path; lunch in one of the two pubs Long Wittenham has to offer; visit the wonderful Pendon Museum of railway memorabilia with its exquisite 'Vale of the White Horse' scene; then walk to the Iron Age fort at Wittenham Clumps and some glorious views, descending through woods to the hamlet of Little Wittenham and thence back to Dorchester.

07/04/08 Work at Days Lock has been completed and the Thames can be crossed with ease now. When leaving the Thames Path, it proved a little difficult to reach the duckboard without getting wet feet! Richard Keighley

We attempted this walk on 4 March 2007. It was not possible to cross the river at Days Lock - Map locn 3 - in order to take the Thames footpath North and West. This was due to contractors working on the lock, their signs state the work should be complete by Easter 2007. We crossed the river at the lock keepers house but still couldn't find a way on to the thames path section of the route (map location 4).

I did this walk in May 2006 and definitely recommend it. The stretch along the Thames bank is stunning and a beautiful spot for a leisurely picnic.
