This walk takes in some of the quieter parts of this area; some paths are rarely walked at all. Only short sections of road-walking are required, all on quiet village roads.

Crossing from the point where the River Dove and River Manifold merge, we follow the Dove south and turn west to cross the Hamps Valley. On the return there is quite a steep climb out of Hamps Valley heading back towards Ilam.

Most stiles were present (but not all); some were just overgrown due to not having been walked recently. In early summer, plants do tend to overgrow if not trampled or cut down.

The region is perhaps spoilt by the cement factory at Waterhouses, clearly visible from the path descending to the Manifold Way trail from Calton.

The small village of Waterfall the central point of this walk has a walker friendly pub 'The Red Lion Inn'. The owners are walkers themselves. This has now joined the growing number of pubs, in this area to not open at lunch times on weekdays, now only opening at lunch times on Saturday and Sunday. While only Bass is available on hand pumps at present this is well kept. They offer a suitably varied menu at prices that would make carrying food not worth while. There are bench tables available outside to admire the scenery or eat your own food if carried.
