Two interesting villages, attractive countryside, pretty dales and a hall in beautiful surroundings are all to be seen in a choice of walks on the edge of the Vale of Pickering, accessible by using the local bus service.

Wander down Main Street, Ebberston. The little stream and pretty buildings make it impossible to hurry and then walk via a track and golf course to Snainton.

Wydale Hall is at the most easterly part of the walk and although it is so peaceful now, its history is varied. A hospital during the 1st World war, headquarters for the Guards Armoured division in the 2nd World war, then accommodation for Italian prisoners of war are some of its past uses. Now it is a retreat and Emmaus Centre. Further information can be found on its web site.

The walk takes you around the Hall, then into the countryside passing through woods and farmland. The various short cuts and alternate routes are mentioned in the directions. Worth mentioning is the fact that it is possible to dismount from the bus in Snainton, just past the Peacock Hotel and start the walk to Ebberston from there.

Dog walkers and those nervous of cattle please check Waypoints 22 and 23. The full length walk ends by crossing a church yard where if you look to the right as you walk towards the road you may see deer in the adjacent field. Refreshment and a rest can be had at the Grapes before walking down the hill to the bus stop.
