From Edale Station, the Pennine Way is used to get to Upper Booth. From here, we cross to the southern side of Edale Valley and begin the ascent of the Great Ridge. The route chosen for the ascent is very steep and difficult, but it was chosen to offer an unparalleled view along the Edale Valley which cannot be seen from any other vantage point.
The walk then crosses Brown Knoll and descends along the western arm of the Great Ridge, to the pretty village of Hayfield. This is an excellent place for a lunch break, having a good number of excellent pubs and other facilities. The last leg of the walk is along the Sett Valley Trail (a disused railway now open for leisure use) to New Mills. The breathtaking traverse of the Millennium Walkway near New Mills Central Station provides an excellent finish to the walk.
