This walk should only be attempted by walkers with some degree of experience and who are confident with exceptionally steep climbs in countryside where the weather can change in an instant. Kinder is notorious for walkers getting into difficulty and requiring mountain rescue; please don't be one of them! Proper walking boots are absolutely essential for this walk and it would also be foolish to attempt the walk without a companion.
Having said all that, this is a very enjoyable walk with possibly the best views available in the Peak District. If you are properly prepared, there is only one really tough part (just after Waymark 3).
A word about food: I had planned unreservedly to recommend the Rambers' Inn (Waymark 9) to prospective walkers, having many times been delighted by the superb food and the hospitality there. Sadly, when I walked the route to gather photographs for Walkingworld I discovered that 'The Rambler Hotel', as it is now named, has gone rather up-market and a female member of staff, whom I believe to be the landlady, was less than welcoming of tired walkers. The prices have shot up and so we left buying nothing. I have no reason to think that the food is any less good than it always was and I sincerely hope that I just caught the lady on an 'off day', but I can no longer give the unqualified recommendation that I planned. Instead we ate at The Old Nag's Head (Waymark 2), which was very welcoming of walkers and served very good food at much more realistic prices. There is also a small café adjacent to the railway station which is basic, but serves good-value food (especially breakfasts!) in a pleasant environment, served by a down-to-earth but very friendly proprietress.
