Before Columbus ruined things, El Hierro was the western edge of the known world. Indeed, the meridian was at the west of the island and all longitudes measured east from there placing, for instance, Paris at thirty degrees east. We combined this walk with a drive all around the island. Note that the HI-45 is unsurfaced (meaning no insurance for a hire car) whilst the HI-400 is surfaced but is narrow, with very steep, unfenced drops. This walk has many spectacular views with – for El Hierro – not too much climbing.
