From Froghall Wharf the route follows the Caldon Canal for about half a mile. Crossing an old pack-horse bridge, the path ascends the lightly timbered hillside to pass through an ancient farmyard, then goes through grassy meadows to Ipstones Village, where if you time it right, the local pub can supply refreshments. From here, an old farm track is followed to Foxt, passing over a bridge that spans a fast-flowing stream in a gorge. A little further brings you to another steep-sided gorge with many steps. Then, part of the Staffordshire Moorland Way is traversed, following the course of an old light railway track back to Froghall Wharf.

Did this walk in lockdown 25 March 2021. It isnt 5 miles. It was 7. At the start of the walk there is Hettys tearoom which was serving a good range of food and drink through the hatch window. When you get halfway at Ipstones theres a really good Londis and a butchers selling fab homemade sausage rolls. In normal times two good pubs to choose from. I like these kind of walks where youre not lugging your lunch round!!!

A walk with plenty of variety. Even the canal at the beginning offers good views. Most of the stiles are the "pass through" type so dog walkers should be happy. The babblng streams at the end of this walk are as good as any I've seen. The pub at Foxt was friendly. We'll be looking for a campsite in the area ....
