Getxo is the port for Bilbao and the attractions of the city mean that most visitors overlook this very prosperous and attractive small seaside resort and the stunning coastline. The wealthy from this part of Spain have always been aware of its charms and many opulent mansions were built before the Civil War, as well as more recent, very desirable properties. This walk starts from the cruise berth and leads past some of these mansions on its way to the metro station to catch the train to Sopelana, the next community along the coast. The main part of the route is back along the cliffs and this is a lovely path with great views, popular with local people. The cliffs are of considerable geological interest and the route also passes a bunker from the civil war, a 18th Century fort, a windmill from the same era and the lighthouse for Getxo. A short distance through more of modern Getxo leads to the old port with its narrow, cobbled streets before a stroll along the promenade back to the ship beside a wide, sandy bay. This is an interesting and scenic walk along part of the coast of the Basque country and is highly recommended.

This is quite a long walk to undertake from a cruise ship, with over 1,000 feet of ascent, so you need to allow six hours or more for the expedition. The path is easy going, however, constructed almost all the way, so trainers are adequate. There are no refreshment stops available except in Getxo and possibly Sopelana and no toilets except seasonal ones, closed in winter, by the beach in Sopelana.
