The walk gains height gradually through the streets of Grassington and then contours the hillside to the site of a hospital used as a sanatorium for patients with TB. This is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, owned and managed by English Nature. What used to be an isolation hospital and when I first knew it, a desolate empty building, now has one of the richest displays of wildflowers in the Dales. This is because the ground has never had modern fertilisers, but has been left to redevelop naturally. Come in July for the best display of flowers and then finish your walk along the banks of the Wharfe.
