Grindleford Station - Carl Wark - Higger Tor - Burbage Rocks - Grindleford Station

Grindleford is a small village close to Hathersage in the Peak District and its station is the start of this varied and not too strenuous walk.

Following a stream up through pleasant woodland, the route soon opens out onto exposed moorland with fine views in front, up to the Iron Age fort of Carl Wark. From its summit it is only a short walk up to the higher peak of Higger Tor. Here there are extensive views all round the adjacent moorland, including Mam Tor and Kinder Scout.

After crossing Burbage Brook we rise onto Burbage Rocks, an edge walk with even more fine views. The route back takes you down through the National Trust's Longshaw Estate.

We did this walk on 17th March 2016 - a lovely sunny day ! All in good order - there is a slight scramble at the top of Carl Wark and Burbage Rocks - but as 'seniors' it proved no problem and well worth the effort for the fantastic views. My pedometer showed longer than the 7.5 miles but timing wasn't far out.
