Starting from the car park at the top of the Hopcott road, paths are followed uphill at the edge of the Staunton Plantation reach a wide ridge track. This ridge track is a section of the Macmillan Way West, a long distance path that runs from Castle Cary in Somerset to Barnstaple in North Devon.
As the ridge track is followed, views initially open up on the left toward Minehead and North Hill, and in front to the wooded slopes of Conygar Tower near Dunster. On a clear day, views extend for miles along the coast in the direction of the Hinkley Point power station and Weston-super-Mare. Later on, the woods fade away on the right and there are views toward Gallax Hill and the two iron age hill forts of Bat's Castle and Black Ball Camp.
After reaching the top of Grabbist Hill, paths are followed down through Alcombe Common to reach Alcombe Combe, There are numerous paths leading off in different directions here, but we stick to the main wide track which slopes gently down through the peaceful combe next to a stream. There is one strenuous climb up Staunton Lane to a farm track at the top, where a final woodland stretch leads back to the car park.
