I'm keen to promote walking in the Howardian Hills AONB - especially so now that I am the Ramblers Delegate on the Joint Advisory Committee for the AONB itself.

This walk starts from the well-serviced village of Hovingham, which has pubs, cafes and a bakery. There is also a popular monthly village market held on the first Saturday each month. This walk is relatively dog-friendly, with only two stiles to climb.

An easy ascent takes us up on to Caukleys Bank, a 3km-long, 100m high soil ridge which ends in rock at Stonegrave. The bridleway which runs over it is popular with horse riders, dog-walkers and ramblers. This walk can be lengthened to 13.5km in length by adding most of Walk 7631. If you do that you will pass through Nunnington (Pub now closed - NT stately home with Cafe and The Old Yard Coffee Shop at Nunnington Studios is on Low Street); however if you do extend, you will miss out on some of the far-reaching views along the full length of Caukleys Bank.
